  small business continuity planning

Business Continuity Planning is the process of defining how your business will continue to function during or after a disaster.  With all the major and minor disasters that have occurred over the last several years, there is a clear need for large and small businesses to have a plan to continue operation when things are not normal.  Business Continuity Planning outlines the step-by-step process of how your business will continue when one of these disasters occurs.  This process is developed before the disaster strikes and all employees are trained to know what to do when the time comes.  Small businesses have the same need to keep their business moving along as large businesses do.  This country keeps its economy moving with many small businesses supplying all types of products.

There are 8 steps to preparing your small business plan. These steps are:

  1. Decide to develop a continuity Plan
  2. Identify Risks that are possible
  3. Identify the impacts to your business
  4. Develop a continuity strategy for your business
  5. Identify emergency procedures for your employees
  6. Develop and implement your business continuity plan
  7. Train your employees
  8. Maintain and exercise your plan

However, after the plan is completed it must be updated as your small business grows and changes.  This requires an annual or semi-annual review of your plan and an update to accommodate the latest changes.  We can assist with regular updates of your plan.

The Institute for Business & Home Security in conjunction with the Public Entity Institute (PERI) puts out a good little package for small to mid-sized businesses called "Open for Business".  The cover of the Small Business Continuity Plan instruction booklet is shown in the sidebar to the right.

We can assist you with planning and implementing this package for your small business.
